Oriental games just don't grab me anymore. I grew up on the Nintendo consoles, but I've enjoyed oriental styles less and less as time goes by. My best guess why is that I lean more toward RP immersion than arcade-style action as I grow older. The Japanese and Koreans tend to have different aesthetic values in stories and animation than Western designers.

I've always wanted to try FFXI, but have always gotten cold feet. Whenever I have the game in my hand to buy, it seems like there is something else that comes up.

I had an exchange student from Japan who swore by the game, and it's made me that much more interested.

Is there still a lot of activity in the newbie zones in that game, or is everyone already established? If I were to start, would I be able to find a group, or would I be toughin' it out solo in content that's not meant for solo?

If you want a game with lots of storyline you should check out Final Fantasy XI. Called missions they are very long and well thought out, but also hard unless you have a great group of friends to do them with.
